The Youth 2 Independence Campbell Street project (Y2I) reimagines social housing for young adults.
At its core, Y2I provides accommodation for youths who are at risk of homelessness interwoven with
a youth hub, social activities and life-long learning opportunities.

Rising five stories above an underused concrete podium covering two levels of an existing carpark,
Y2I reclaims wasted urban space and transforms it into a vibrant, activated contribution to the city.
Embraced by the warmth of the custom LIMINAL-Orange perforated screening, the housing hub
presents a city ‘marker’ within the greater urban context, while providing a welcoming home for 26
individuals aged between 16 and 24.

From rooftop social areas and edible gardens to an elevated, open-air 3-point basketball court
encouraging fun, active social living and cohesion, Y2I fosters a sense of belonging and empowers
residents to form sustainable independence to build their own brighter futures.
Homes Tasmania, and service provider Anglicare, consider Y2I an innovative example of social
housing, demonstrating a progressive approach that prioritises independence and supportive
networks.

Approach

Reclaiming an underutilised site and providing a life-changing social program, Y2I restores coherence
to the urban fabric and provides much needed housing density with social enterprise and life-long
learning an integrated component of the housing model.
Expressed housing modules heighten individuality within the composition, referencing the surrounding
heritage brickwork, where each brick has individual character within a cohesive whole. The
translucent skin adds vibrancy, abstracting the orange hues of the contextual masonry heritage
palette, while offering shading and privacy for the building’s occupants.

Importantly the interiors were designed to be non-institutional and congenial through the use of an
uplifting palette that will stand the test of time, while still being welcoming and inviting. The appliances
selected were an important part of achieving a sense of domestic familiarity and quality.
The purposeful positioning of different types of communal spaces and their adjacencies has been key
in encouraging interaction and spontaneous, social connections. Strategically the laundry is directly
adjacent social spaces on the rooftop, the communal lounge overlooks the 3-point basketball court,
study and ‘break-out’ nooks populate naturally lit ‘internal streets’ that expand and contract creating
habitable opportunities. These are the lungs and social connectors of the building providing
circulation, gathering and quiet nooks, landscape and fresh air.

The communal kitchen in the is adjacent rooftop edible gardens encouraging healthy eating, enabling
education programmes around cooking, gardening and growing produce.
The supported environment is underpinned by education and real-life learning to enable and empower
residents with employable skills that are future-proofed; ensuring independence, relevance and
sustainability in the workforce.
