An extremely tired 1950’s weatherboard home in Sandy Bay was in desperate need of renovating due to it retaining all original features, all in poor condition after decades of use. Not only did the home require substantial renovating, but large extensions were required for ultimate functionality for the young family. Key to the brief was to provide ample room for entertaining and for the owners to pursue their love of cooking.

The kitchen aesthetic is timeless and elegant finishes consisting of ultra-fine stainless steel bench, concrete style splashback, natural timbers, and polytec thermolaminated panels.

Whilst an island bench was employed, rather than house the kitchen sinks within this in the traditional style, it was decided that the main cooking zone would be within the island bench. This meant that when in the kitchen, the cook could easily communicate with guests and family when spending the majority of time at the stove top. To capitalise on this, the owners dream of having a 150cm Smeg A5 stove was realised, which becomes the hero of the kitchen. Coupled with the 150cm ceiling-mounted Qasair Rangehood, the options for this large cooking surface and huge double ovens are basically limitless. By adding a Smeg compact Steam Oven to this already well-equipped set of appliances, the cooking capabilities are endless and extend to “smart” cooking such as Sous Vide, customisable recipes, steaming, slow cooking and all manners of timing options and “set and forget.” Coupled with this is a matching Smeg Microwave which provides a seamless look of double ovens.

Due to the minimal and classic aesthetic, a French Door Fisher and Paykel fridge was selected for its timeless finish and elegant lines.

Another key area of the kitchen is the coffee station. As lovers of good quality coffee, the traditional Italian coffee machine needed an area all on its own for the preparation of quality coffee. A hugely successful addition to the brief was to add a small sink in the coffee station for the cleaning of milk jugs and coffee groups. This really makes it effortless to keep coffee grind mess to a minimum as well as have close access to a small sink for washing milk jugs.

Elsewhere in the kitchen, two large stainless steel sinks feature a commercial style Franke tap for ease of rinsing dishes and large baking trays.

A butler’s pantry with Caesarstone benchtops and timber features completes the kitchen by adding large amounts of storage and additional preparation areas.

Beyond the passion for cooking, the owner is an avid collector of wine and needed the ultimate cellar to store over 3000 bottles of wine that has been collected over twenty years. The wine cellar is crafted out of pale timbers and dark monument racks and shelves, flanked by concrete panels and a dark timber ceiling. A timber tasting bench at one end allows for further entertaining and tasting beyond the kitchen and there is also a cozy corner with an armchair for the collector to sit and ponder the wine list and collection. The cellar is arranged in two seven-meter-long isles of racks with a central feature display area. The display area is double-sided and houses the large format bottles the owner focuses on collecting, which range up to a number of massive 9-litre bottles.

All in all, the home is extremely easy to live in and the kitchen and wine cellar are a dream to use and make entertaining a dream.
